Simplicity
This week you'll sit with one of Stoicism's most concrete and personal demands: simplicity in how you live, eat, dress, and want. The seven passages move you from discovering that less can genuinely satisfy, through the harder work of practicing restraint daily, to the final test of whether you can say, with full honesty, that you need nothing more than you already have. Each day builds on the last, so take your time with each one before moving ahead.
Passage
Just as it is a sign of luxury to seek out dainties, so it is madness to avoid that which is customary and can be purchased at no great price. Philosophy calls for plain living, but not for penance; and we may perfectly well be plain and neat at the same time. This is the mean of which I approve; our life should observe a happy medium between the ways of a sage and the ways of the world at large; all men should admire it, but they should understand it also.
— Seneca, Letters 5.5
Reflection
Yesterday Seneca showed you the ceiling: the maximum freedom possible when needs shrink to almost nothing. Today he draws the practical boundary for ordinary life. Plain living does not mean penance, and conspicuous austerity is its own kind of performance. The mean he describes is quietly radical: a life that any thoughtful person can understand and even admire, neither extravagant nor theatrical in its self-denial. This keeps simplicity honest. It cannot become a new form of showing off.
Go deeper
Where in your own life has a genuine effort at simplicity quietly slid into something you perform for others or for your own self-image, and what would it look like to pull it back to the plain middle Seneca describes?
Practice
The Admirable Middle
Make a short, honest list of three to five choices you make regularly around food, clothing, or spending. For each one, ask: is this closer to luxury, to penance, or to the plain and neat middle Seneca approves of? Mark each one honestly. Then pick one item that has drifted and write a single sentence describing what the 'happy medium' would actually look like for that choice in your specific life.
