The Roles We Are Given
This week you will sit with one of Stoicism's most persistent images: life as a play, and you as an actor who did not write the script. The passages move you from acceptance of that basic fact, through the harder questions of self-knowledge, performance, and public witness, and finally to a moment of honest reckoning about whether you are actually living what you say you believe. Each day builds on the last, so try not to skip ahead.
Passage
Do not act unwillingly nor selfishly nor without self-examination, nor with divergent motives. Let no affectation veneer your thinking. Be neither a busy talker, nor a busybody. Moreover let the God within be the guardian of a real man, a man of ripe years, a statesman, a Roman, a magistrate, who has taken his post like one waiting for the Retreat to sound, ready to depart, needing no oath nor any man as witness. And see that you have gladness of face, no need of service from without nor the peace that other men bestow. You should stand upright, not be held upright.

Reflection
Marcus steps away from the theatre image and says something that cuts to the center of the week: stand upright, do not be held upright. After three days of thinking about roles, gaps, and performance, he gives you the criterion that matters most. The 'God within' he describes is not mystical decoration; it is the internal witness who sees whether you are genuinely governing yourself or merely maintaining appearances because someone is watching. Today the question is about the source of your steadiness.

Choose one thing you did today, or plan to do today, that you would do differently if no one would ever know about it. Sit with that for five minutes without rationalizing. Then write one sentence about what it tells you about whether the God within is governing or the audience is.
