A Little Soul Carrying a Corpse
This week you are learning one of the most arresting images in all of Stoic thought: "a little soul carrying a corpse." The phrase is Epictetus's own, and it means something simple but vertiginous once it lands: you are not your body. Your body is matter, weight, clay. You, the real you, are the reasoning soul animating it. That distinction is worth spending a week with, because almost every anxiety, vanity, and self-betrayal you have ever felt has its roots in forgetting it.

'To what purpose, then, am I now using my soul?' In every case ask yourself this question and examine yourself: 'What have I now in this part which men call the governing part, and whose soul have I at present? A child's, a boy's, a woman's, a despot's, a dumb animal's, a dangerous beast's?'

Reflection
Marcus introduces a different angle here: not just what you are, but what quality your soul is expressing right now. He lists: a child's soul, a tyrant's soul, a dumb animal's soul. The governing part, what the Stoics called the hegemonikon (heh-geh-MOH-nee-kon), meaning the ruling or directing faculty of the mind, is always active. The question is whether it is ruling well or badly. You can have a soul that is technically distinct from the body but still be running it like a spoiled child, chasing comfort and fleeing discomfort all day. Identifying with your soul rather than your body is only step one. Step two is asking what kind of soul you are choosing to be in this moment.
