You Are Not Your Body

This week you will sit with one of Stoicism's most demanding and freeing ideas: that you are not your body. Starting Sunday, you will map the three-part self and learn to locate yourself correctly within it. By mid-week you will be tested on what that location actually costs you in daily life, and by Saturday you will be asked to make a real commitment about how to live from the inside out.

Passage

There are three things of which you are compounded: body, vital spirit, mind. Two of these are your own in so far as you must take care of them, but only the third is in the strict sense your own. So, if you separate from yourself, namely from your mind, all that others do or say, all that you yourself did or said, all that troubles you in the future, all that as part of the bodily envelope or natural spirit attaches to you without your will; yet still, if you separate all this from the governing self so that your mind power, freed from the chain of necessity, lives purified and released by itself—doing what is just, willing what comes to pass, and speaking what is true; then you will have it in your power at least to live out the time that is left until you die, untroubled and with kindness and reconciled with your own good Spirit.

— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations XII.3

Reflection

Marcus returns at the end of the week with a summary that feels like a gift. He confirms what you have been working through: body and vital spirit are yours to care for, but the mind alone is yours in the strict sense. Then he gives you the full picture of what liberation actually looks like: not an escape from circumstance but a specific way of living inside it, doing what is just, willing what comes to pass, speaking what is true. The freedom he describes is not dramatic. It is quiet, untroubled, kind. This is what the week has been building toward, not a philosophical position you hold, but a way of spending the time that remains.

Go deeper

Looking back across this week, what is the one concrete change in how you relate to your body, your comfort, your fear, or your honesty, that you are actually willing to carry forward, and what would make it stick rather than fade by next Sunday?

Practice

The Week's Commitment

About 15 minutes

Take fifteen minutes for a written integration. First, re-read the personal vow you wrote yesterday. Then answer three questions in writing: What did this week show you about where you had been living from (body, energy, or governing self)? What one shift, however small, do you want to make permanent? What is the most likely obstacle, and how will you handle it when it comes, not if? Close by writing Marcus's three qualities, 'doing what is just, willing what comes to pass, speaking what is true,' and next to each one, write a single word or phrase that names what that quality looks like in your actual life this coming week.
