True Wealth Is Wanting Little

This week you'll study one of the most quietly radical ideas in Stoic philosophy: that true wealth is not accumulation but reduction, the deliberate practice of wanting little. The Stoics called this autarkeia (say it: ow-TAR-kay-ah), a Greek word meaning self-sufficiency or inner completeness, the state of needing nothing outside yourself to feel whole. It sounds simple, but you'll see this week how deeply it cuts against the grain of ordinary life, and how much freedom it can return to you.

Passage

And how shall I free myself?—Have you not heard over and over again that you ought to eradicate desire utterly, direct your aversion towards the things that lie within the sphere of the moral purpose, and these things only, that you ought to give up everything, your body, your property, your reputation, your books, turmoil, office, freedom from office? For if once you swerve aside from this course, you are a slave, you are a subject, you have become liable to hindrance and to compulsion, you are entirely under the control of others.

— Epictetus, Discourses 4.4.33

Reflection

We're now at the center of the week, and Epictetus makes the mechanism explicit. The Stoics had a name for your sphere of genuine agency: prohairesis (pro-HY-reh-sis), your faculty of choice, the part of you that decides how to respond to anything. Epictetus says freedom comes from directing your desires only toward what lies within that sphere. When you desire things outside it, your body, your reputation, your property, you hand your will over to forces that don't answer to you. Wanting little is not about poverty; it's about keeping your desires inside the territory you actually govern.

Go deeper

Where in your life right now are you directing desire toward something outside your prohairesis, something you cannot fully control, and what has that cost you in terms of anxiety or dependence?

Practice

Desire Audit

About 8 minutes

Write down three things you want right now. For each one, ask: is this something I can fully bring about through my own choices and character, or does it depend on circumstances, other people, or luck? Mark each desire as 'inside' or 'outside' your sphere of control. Spend three minutes sitting with what you find.
